Australia’s assistant international education minister Julian Hill has outlined a visa ‘triage’ system to fast-track applications from students forced offshore by new rules, aiming to process straightforward cases in five days. The measures come as public universities brace for A$2 billion in lost revenue this year due to an 18 per cent drop in international commencements. Hill warned the core intent of the crackdown on visa misuse will remain, while a new discussion paper explores updates to ‘genuine student’ and financial capacity assessments. According to Times Higher Education, the government may also suspend recruitment at some institutions for the first time.
