In-State School

I came to the University of North Texas from out of state and I am sure I had a much difference experience than those who were in-state. First of all, because so many people lived a short distance away from the university, it seemed like everyone went home on the weekends. Denton is a nice town and there is quite a bit to do, but it gets boring when half of the school decides to go home every weekend. Sometimes it felt more like a community college than a big university. I think I would have liked this university much more if I were from Texas. I was also really disappointed with the low amount of school spirit. Where our athletics lack, our music department somewhat compensates. It is cool there is such a big music program because music concerts seem to be always going on, which is awesome. The dorms are decent and there are a lot of international students living in the dorms. There are lots of things for the residents to use like video games and cooking utilities. One thing I really liked about the school was how environmentally friendly it is! I think about 40% of the school is powered by alternative energy sources, which is awesome! There is also a lot of community service programs and opportunities to get involved and volunteer.

Pros: challenging courses, Artsy

Cons: poorly maintained campus, Difficult for transfer students, Financial aid office is incompetent

Mixed Feelings

I have mixed feelings about this university. There are some areas where the university is pretty strong but it is lacking in others. The general campus is nice and very safe and the education is solid but it depends on your major. I have may friends in the College of Music, for example, and I would say is definitely one of the best in the country (especially for Jazz!). I was a geography major and felt I received a quality education. The department is pretty broad with a diverse range of specialties. The faculty is nice but I would say they care much more about research than teaching. There are hundreds of on-campus organizations to check out and usually they have something for everyone. I will say that the advisers do not do a good job at all of preparing you for your requirements or helping you select the best courses.

Pros: challenging courses

Cons: unhelpful advisors, Rising tuition

I would recommend to a friend!
