Education System in Pitcairn Islands

Primary Education

Pitcairn Islands EducationEducation on the South Pacific Pitcairn Islands is a simple affair when compared with more sophisticated nations. There is only one school and there is only one full-time teacher known as the Education Officer.

Nevertheless, school is compulsory between ages 5 and 15, and New Zealand standards are maintained. This takes place at the solitary primary school illustrated here. There are approximately 50 inhabitants in total. In more recent years, pupil numbers have dropped as low as 7, yet the system is maintained for the sake of the children.

Secondary Education

Further education is encouraged in New Zealand at Pitcairn Islands Government expense, and there are opportunities for correspondence education too. Enrollment at an overseas university is possible at least in theory, although graduates inevitably drift away from home.
